Sigmund Freud Museum - a landmark in Vienna

The Freud Museum in Vienna is one of the most mysterious and unusual places in Austria. Having visited the office in which the famous founder of psychoanalysis received his patients, you can plunge into the atmosphere of those times and feel the life that Sigmund Freud lived.

General information

The Sigmund Freud Museum (Vienna) is located on the old Bergasse street, in the same house where the famous founder of psychoanalysis once lived and practiced. Here he spent most of his life, but after the Nazis came to power in 1938, the Sigmund family was forced to flee Vienna to London, where Freud spends the last months of his life. In 1971, a museum was opened in his house in Austria.

Sigmund Freud museums are in all three cities in which the founder of psychoanalysis lived: in Pribor, Vienna and London. The Freud’s Dream Museum in St. Petersburg is also open, dedicated not to Sigmund himself, but to his scientific discoveries.

Exposition

The Sigmund Freud House Museum in Vienna consists of several rooms in which the family of a psychologist once lived and worked. The first floor is the living quarters, in which Freud's personal belongings and photographs are presented. Here you can see the clothes worn by the Austrian psychoanalyst, as well as interior items of those times. For example, an old wooden suite, a velvet sofa and a number of unusual sculptures. Also on the ground floor you can find some biographical documents. Unfortunately, a lot of really interesting exhibits were taken by the family to England, therefore, in comparison with the London Museum, Vienna has very few unique things.

Museum guests note that in addition to the exhibits, they will remember the main entrance to the second floor: an elegant spiral staircase and a velvet carpet immediately create the necessary atmosphere.

The second floor is the workrooms in which Freud developed his theory of psychoanalysis. The exposition is represented by a desk, stationery and other things that the psychologist used. In the Freud Museum you can see how the offices of psychologists and neurologists looked in the 19th and 20th centuries. It will also be interesting to look at the waiting room for patients. Unfortunately, the most important and interesting exhibit is the couch, on which Sigmund received his visitors, since 1938 he has been in the Freud Museum in London.

The main pride of the museum in Vienna is Europe's largest library, which houses over 35,000 books on problems and theory of psychoanalysis. Some publications are presented to visitors to the museum, while others are kept in a special archive. By the way, thanks to such a large library, the museum often hosts scientific conferences and meetings of psychoanalysts.
